Song of San Lucas

San Lucas Toliman is a village along the shores of Lake Atitlan, Guatemala.  Atitlan means at the water from a fusion of

simple Nahuatl - Aztec - words.  The lake fills an enormous caldera that was formed in an eruption 84,000 years ago. three volcanos flank the southern end of what has been described as on eof the most beautiful lakes in the world.

The dynamic linear elements represented in the backstrap weavings of Kakchiquel Maya from this area present a balance of living in a geologically active area. Created for the Textile Artists of Virginia exhibit, "Tales of a Mayan Huipil:  Art Quilts Inspired by Guatemalan Weavings"
