NEW!

It is an honor to curate the exhibit, Jinny Beyer - A Retrospective at the Virginia Quilt Museum, Harrisonburg, VA (www.vaquiltmuseum.org) from January 10 - April 8, 2023.  If you are traveling along the East Coast, take time to view the exquisite quilts that Jinney has created. From her very first quilt, Grandmother's Flower Garden to Window, Jinny's use of color and design sparkles like opulant jewels.  The architecture of the historic Virginia Quilt Museum, built in 1856,is a beautiful setting for her quilts.

When you view antique quilts in an exhibit or in an antique store do you wonder about who took the time to select a pattern, draft it, choose fabrics and then quilt it? It is so frustrating to me to read, "Maker Unknown." I want to know more about the person who created the quilt. What were their thoughts and feelings as they sewed the pieces in place.  We have the opportunity for historians and quilt makers of the future to know a little bit about ourselves.  That information may be included on the quilt's label (in addition to being part of the quilt's design / topic / quilting pattern....

The minimum information that "should" be on a label:

Quilt maker's complete name: first, middle, last (including maiden), married

The reason for the quilt's creation: celebration, graduation, birth, friendship, charity...?  For example: "Jane Smith High School Graduation, June 13, 2023,  Smithtown, Virginia"

Recipient:

f so, for whom? And not just for 'a relation'. Complete name (yes, first, middle and last), Quilt made for my daughter, Mary Ann Smith-Brown.

Where were you living when stitching the piece?  List it.  Granger, Virginia

Year of completion: 2023 (Or you can list how long it took to create the masterpiece).

For example:

Applique Quilt

Made with love for my daughter, Mary Ann Admon-Brown

On the occasion of her graduation from Jane Smith Highschool, June 13, 2023

Smithtown, Virginia

Pattern design by Brenda Brown

Machine quilting by Lois Potter

Hand appliqued by Elizabeth Marie Admon, completed in 2023 of Granger, Virginia

It does seem like a lot of information.  But wouldn't we know a wee bit more about this woman and her daughter when we view the quilt?

Happy quilting,

Paula
